Jasper Hong Sim

My research focuses on issues that sit at the intersections of child language acquisition, phonetics, and sociolinguistics. I take on an empirical–constructivist perspective in addressing research questions that examine (i) (socio-)phonetic variation in child-directed speech, (ii) the impact that variable input has on child phonological development, and (iii) the linguistic, input, and experiential factors that modulate language outcomes. My secondary research interests are in language variation and change and in issues relating to language, race, and culture. 

I completed my PhD (Theoretical and Applied Linguistics) in 2022 under the supervision of Prof. Brechtje Post. My doctoral research focused on child phonological acquisition in bilingual preschoolers in multi-dialectal/multi-accent and multicultural Singapore. I am currently Assistant Professor (English Language and Literature) at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
