Cambridge Language Sciences Interdisciplinary Research Centre has concluded a new inter-institutional agreement of cooperation with the Chuo University Institute of Cultural Sciences.

The aim of the agreement is to further facilitate research exchange and collaboration across countries and disciplines through activities such as joint research and academic networking.

Common ground for future collaboration includes second language acquisition and language education following theoretical, psycholinguistic and applied approaches. Through this agreement, wider, inter- and cross-disciplinary research activities are expected to develop at both staff and student levels.

Prof. Ianthi Tsimpli

Chuo University’s Institute of Cultural Sciences (ICS) is an interdisciplinary research institute aimed at advancing the understanding of culture and cultural issues through collaborative research. Members are encouraged to participate in research beyond their individual areas of expertise by collaborating with other members from diverse disciplines across a broad range of areas. The Institute takes a unique team-based approach to collaborative research with teams potentially comprising a combination of full-time Chuo University faculty members, visiting researchers from other universities, and doctoral students who may join as associate researchers.

The Institute's Director, Yoshimi Akiyama, Professor of Law at Chuo University, says of the ICS: “[Our] flexible and diversified generative framework has enabled the Institute to act as fertile ground for developing cross-disciplinary and collaborative knowledge among individuals with varied interests and diverse areas of expertise. The resulting research activities have made diverse and invaluable contributions to the world, not only in the form of public workshops and annual journals, but also through the special publication of collections of research articles and translations.”

The collaboration between Cambridge Language Sciences and ICS was initiated by Ianthi Tsimpli, Professor of English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge, and Shigenori Wakabayashi, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Chuo University. It is hoped that the agreement will strengthen research collaborations and knowledge transfer between Cambridge Language Sciences and Chuo University. Potential collaborations include the exchange of academic staff, graduate students and associate researchers, and joint research projects, conferences and cultural programs.

Prof. Tsimpli said: “The collaboration was initiated by Professor Shigenori Wakabayashi, a PhD graduate of the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics, whose research interests are closely aligned with those of several colleagues in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages & Linguistics as well as the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.”

She added “Common ground for future collaboration includes second language acquisition and language education following theoretical, psycholinguistic and applied approaches. Through this agreement, wider, inter- and cross-disciplinary research activities are expected to develop at both staff and student levels.”

This agreement is part of a growing network of external collaborations between Cambridge Language Sciences and other world-leading research institutions working in the field of language sciences.
