In her recent TEDxCambridgeUniversity talk Cambridge Language Sciences network member Dr Dora Alexopoulou discusses the positive impact of learning activities that reflect how learners' native language influences second language learning.

Multilingualism is more important than ever in an increasingly interconnected world: languages are important for study, work, art, international diplomacy, and collaboration. Understanding how our linguistic mind guides the process of learning a new language is essential for improving our teaching. In this talk Dora Alexopoulou presents how learning activities that reflect the ways that learners' native language influences second language learning can make a real difference.

Dora Alexopoulou is a Principal Research Associate in the Theoretical and Applied Linguistics Section at the University of Cambridge. She is currently PI of the EF Research Lab for Applied Language and Learning, which investigates second language learning of English and aims to bring innovation in language teaching through a systematic cross-fertilisation between linguistic research and teaching techniques. She is also the co-founder of the Cambridge Bilingualism Network and founding Editor of Languages, Society and Policy (LSP).

This talk was given at TEDxCambridgeUniversity using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community.
