To coincide with the European Day of Languages, a major new research project on multilingualism launches its website today (26 September).
MEITS (Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies) will seek to "transform the health of the discipline of Modern Languages in the UK, attitudes towards multilingualism, and language policy at home and abroad". The project is led by Professor Wendy Ayres-Bennett (University of Cambridge) and the team includes researchers from partner institutions Queen's University Belfast, University of Edinburgh and University of Nottingham, as well as Cambridge academics in the fields of Linguistics, Education and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
The new MEITS website provides details of forthcoming events, as well as plans for a new peer-reviewed journal, Languages, Society and Policy, which will make current research accessible in non-technical language to parents, teachers, policy-makers and others with an interest in learning about multilingualism. A pop-up Museum of Languages will also form part of the project.
