Research

The central theme of my research is "consciousness." In the domain of second language acquisition in particular, the role consciousness plays—both in the process of acquiring a language and in the use of that acquired knowledge—forms a pivotal question. Substantial research has explored both conscious and unconscious learning, as well as the types of knowledge these processes yield. My current research probes these essential questions: What is the connection between conscious and unconscious learning and the knowledge each produces? How feasible is unconscious acquisition and processing? How is the content of consciousness that comes to mind related to language? And crucially, how does the influence of consciousness distinguish the acquisition of a first language from that of a second?
